It’s in our dreams that some of our brightest ideas reside.  Sometimes our dreams are over-the-top.  They’re elaborate visions of what we’d do, had we only the time and money to make them happen.

But somewhere between those over-the-top visions of grandiosity and reality, there are the dreams which are great landscaping concepts waiting to be given birth.  In this post, we’re going to discuss how to take your ideas and make them real.

“Home landscaping ideas:  building a storyboard” is dedicated to leading you through the visioning process and toward the actual design of what you see in your mind’s eye.

Dreaming in pictures.

If you’re reading this, I’m sure you know what Pinterest is.  This is an online community where people share their passions.  From art, to interior design to landscape ideas, you’ll find it all here, collected into storyboards created by people all over the world.

Whether you use Pinterest or home improvement magazines (or both), part of your home landscaping visioning process is to collect images which speak to your aesthetic.  Whatever you hope to create, you have an aesthetic framework for it.

By collecting images which speak to your vision and even add to it, you’re dreaming in pictures.  You have the idea.  The examples you’ll collect online and from magazines will inform this and provide you with even more fodder to clarify your vision.

The wish list.

Now that you’ve spent some time dreaming in pictures and clarifying your vision, it’s time to write up your wish list.  What do you want?  What do you want now, next year, 10 years from now?  What are your priorities for home landscaping?

Distinguish what you really need from what you want and what you wish for.  What’s practical?  What’s fantastical?  Where’s the middle ground and what’s possible?

Once you’ve narrowed down the wish list to what you really need, it’s time to reconcile your pictures and your list.  Those pictures are still in play, as they can continue to creatively inform the result.

Now sit down with your significant other and do the budget.  Agree on the elements you both believe are important.  Whether that’s a water feature you both desire, or a patio to add value to your home, agree on the materials you’d prefer to use, the scale and the gardening touches which will make it a showpiece area of your home.

In your dreams are ideas which can become part of your reality, when you approach them realistically.  Getting from the visioning to the landscaping job is a process which requires careful consideration of placement, scale and budget.

The storyboard is where your dreams take flight, but the wish list and its reconciliation is where you take the next step, creating lasting beauty and value for your home.  PRO TIP:  this is how people who design for a living do it!
